24 and counting...

Some shows only work in marathon form. Since I am changing from DirectTV to AT&T U-verse this week, which will add HBO, Showtime, Encore, Starz and the On Demand option for all and the ability to record 4 shows at once, I had to quickly watch all the shows saved on my DVR since I will be losing it in a matter of days. The top of my to-watch list was 24. I've been watching 24 since season one but have always waited for the DVDs of every season, except one. The only season of 24 I watched week to week was season 6, also known as the worst season of 24 ever. I feel like switching from the DVDs of a show to on-air form is one of the most difficult transitions one can experience in their life. I have since placed my hand over the cable box and vowed to never watch 24 as a week-to-week show again. So after catching up on the first 9 hours of the newest season this weekend, I am calling this season a success, with a few exceptions. First, I am loving the return of Renee Walker. She is totally the female Jack Bauer, but damaged. She is what Jack Bauer would be if he allowed his job to affect his life. Also loving the addition of Freddie Prinze Jr. to the cast. I keep waiting for Sarah Michelle Gellar to make a cameo...preferably in the CTU cafeteria. What I am not loving? Katee Sackhoff's character Dana Walsh. I was never into Battlestar Galactica, but from what I have heard, she is some kinda butt-kicking action babe. So why keep her in the odd-looking, futuristic CTU office that appears to be accessed via the sewers? I am so confused. And her storyline is LAME. I understand that the point of these storylines is to show that the world doesn’t stop because of a terrorist threat, but still. So you know how every season there is either a shocking death or twist about someone being bad? My moneys on Sackhoff’s Dana Walsh and the other data guy Arlo Glass. Arlo is the type of character that always ends up being bad on 24. But I think my favorite part of this season, and all seasons, of 24 is the reinforcement of stereotypes, mostly racial. Of course the Russians are mobsters. Of course the Middle Easterners are terrorists. Of course the Republicans are power-hungry old white men in business suits who will do anything to make our country stronger. And of course the tech-savvy girl is socially awkward. The only black females on the show have been ladies willing to step over anyone to further their careers. If they were on a reality show, they would be the gals saying “I’m not here to make friends.” Well, in keeping with my oath, I will be refraining from any 24 viewing for a few weeks, so hopefully this season will stay entertaining in the meantime.
